Mabinogi, The Fantasy Life, is a free to play online game, developed by a Korean company called Nexon. This company is known by the development of several most played MMOGs in Asia. Mabinogi is a virtual world based on the Celtic culture, very similar to the settings of the movie "Lord of the Rings". The game has its own market system and currency where you can buy and sell items and even exchange for real money. Asides from the usual combat system and killing monsters, this game have a life system where you can farm, tailor clothes, cook foods, build houses, write music, make potions and even make poisons by mixing two different potions. As we discussed in class, this type of online games can make people antisocial because of they are really time consuming and addictive. Three of the thirty six players that i have interviewed have the game open the whole day so they can access the game whenever they look at the computer. However, the game has its good sides like any social network, you can meet new people and make new friends, it may also helps people relieve daily stress and depression.

As I have said in class, I don’t think that playing these types of games will make you more of less social with people. Even if you are the type of person who plays them a lot, you still have to go out into this world to go shopping, do laundry and so on. Even the biggest addict to these games is going to have some form of social interaction that does not involve typing. In this way, people are not going to lose the social skills they already have. Note how I say already because you learn social skills when you’re young (like 4 or 5 years old) and playing with other kids. Those skills don’t just go away. And even if someone were to be playing games on the computer all day, it’s not going to make anti-social. If anything it will make them more social because they can interact with other people, even though the other person might be in the form of a sheep for example.
This game seems a lot of fun. I don't believe that people become anti- social because of a game. There are many ways people can socialize: when they go to work, go to school, run errands, attend family gatherings, etc. People can not avoid talking to people. In my opinion, it's impossible. Therefore, playing games doesn't make people not have a social life.
I agree with Esther and Sara. To say that people become anti-social and lose any socializing skills needed in life is taking it to the extreme. Some people might become addicted to playing online games but they still know how to interact with other intelligent life forms. There are benefits that come from these types of games. You can make new friends, interact with people that could be on the other side of the globe, and have fun while doing it. At the end of the day you still have to go to school, work, buy food, buy supplies, or interact with family. People don't tend to shun the world because of an online game. They still have to live their lives.
I don't believe that online games can completely destroy ones social abilities; however they can have a negative effect on them and probably often do. I think games such as "Mabinogi" can also be useful methods to help people who already have social issues more easily make "friends." I think that it's very important for people to develop their social skills at a young age and I don't think these computer games are the way to do it. Yeah people still need to interact with others on a day to day basis anyhow and it's almost impossible to avoid doing so, but if children start developing their social skills from online games their going to find it much more difficult to adapt to "real life" conversation.
"Mabinogi" seems like a really fun online game. It looks like it is a website that can really hook its members and have them addicted to it. However, socially I think it is a joke. The example that we saw in class was a girl who became best friends with a sheep. Even if it was a person, you do not know what he/she really looks like, it is not a real friendship. Even more so, it does effect the person's social skills because all they know is how to talk about the game. All of their social skills are revolved around a game and a fake person. I think when they go into the real world they will be lost when it comes to socializing. I definitely think there could be a right balance between the two and bad socialization skills may not occur.
Mabinogi seems like a really cool site. This site allows you to talk to people and make new friends. I don't think Mabinogi causes anti-social behavior. Kids or adults still have to socialize in their lives. Adults have jobs where they must socialize. Children have school where they socialize. Mabinogi may cause people to be shy but people will still learn basic social skills.
Mabinogi looks like a fun site. People can meet other people with similar hobbies or opinions which can lead to good conversations. I think games such as Mabinogi does not promote anti-social behavior. I think it actually encourages people to be more social. If people can make friends with someone they don't know and never seen, I think starting a conversation with someone they have seen once or twice in the library or with someone their friend introduces them to would be no problem.
It seems as if people feel that games like this and such helps to promote anti-social behavior but I disagree. I think that these games can help people who have trouble making friends. I think that games like Mabinogi, Second Life and such are fun and practical.
I don't believe "virtual worlds" or online communities can necessarily cause a previously outgoing person to become an introvert. However, I do feel they can retard the formation of social skills in the young. Communication through a computer screen bears very little resemblace to actual face to face conversation. If children spend most of their time instant messaging or blogging instead of making real friends and forming real relationships, I think it will have a negative affect on them in the future.
Judging by what we viewed in glass, this game actually does look pretty fun if you have some time to kill or just feel like going on for a little while. As was said in class, about how some people are ALWAYS on, I can't seem to wrap my brain around it. What about going out with friends? or eating dinner with your folks? In some instances I can see it becoming a bit of a problem, but it is something that is completely manageable and can help you interact with people all over the place.
Even though i don't know you i will leave a comment... i play mabinogi and i think it is really fun and im 12. my brother who is 14 even plays
i only play Parking Games, but i am willing to try this game. this looks awesome
