This unit is about advertising and how to read it and critique it. Since we are three weeks away from a national election, we will begin with political advertising. Then we will discuss various categories that are used to target people in all kinds of advertising.
We will not have presentations this time around, as we did with the first unit. Instead, each of you will be expected to set up and maintain your own blog. The topic of your blog will be some theme or strategy that you find in advertising. It could be as simple as "puppies and kittens in ads" or it could be more ambiguous, such as "selling happiness." It could focus on a certain topic, such as "images of China in US ads" or it could deal with certain products, such as "luxury car ads." Whatever you choose, you will collect videos, screenshots, and articles relevant to your topic, and this research will form the basis of your second paper.
In every class we will focus on two people's advertising project. After each class, you will comment on one of those blogs.
