GoodReads Summary

GoodReads is a social networking site for those who love to read and want to connect with other book lovers. The site allows for a person to create a customizable profile that they can use to list the books they have read, and even allows for them to give reviews and opinions. The site even has a section so people can communicate together, create groups discussion of books and make friends.

One of the issues we discussed in class was that if the site supported the idea of the digitization of books. I feel that the site is the introduction of books to technology. I support the joining of technology and books as seen in the Kindle, some may not. However, it does pose possible negative outcomes, like if books were digitized some people may illegally share the data of the books as it has been done with music.

Books are not the same as songs, most people may want thousands of songs in a apple but i doubt that many people would want a thousand books in a kindle. And about sharing, I believe all of us have already shared a book with someone. I like the idea of sharing my favorite books as easy as sharing mp3 songs with my friends.

In a world where fewer and fewer people are reading actual books I think the success of GoodReads is encouraging. Book clubs have certainly never been popular among younger generations but maybe this site can change that.

I think GoodReads is a great concept. I know that people are more likely to bond with other people if they read and are interested in the same books as they are. This promotes networking through literacy and taste in books. I hope that it never gets to the point where we have all our books a Kindle. I dont want bookshelves to become obsolete, and you can't get that new book smell with a Kindle.
