Myspace Summary

Myspace, which is owned by the News Corporation, is known to be the Web's largest social networking site. However, many of the users feels as if their "space" is being invaded. The reason to this is Myspace is only allowing users to use "Myspace things". They are limiting the amounts of applications that users can put onto their account. Myspace doesn't want third party pieces (also known as widgets) if they are violating its term of service that bring unnecessary things to the site. For example, Tila Ngyugen also known as Tila Tequila used Myspace as a way of promoting her new album Hoooka on her page with a music player accompanied by a video and it was hit. However, it disappeared after a couple of days. Tila Tequila realized that she violated the terms and therefore it had to be taken down. These widgets that enable users to sell items or advertise must be authorized and has to share a partnership with Myspace in order to be on the site. Fred Wilson explained the strategy that the News Corporation was using. The News Corporation was trying to take advantage of the growing widgets while also controlling the amount of widgets that made it onto the Myspace site. In Fred Wilson’s point of view, he believed that this was a dangerous strategy. “Every attempt everyone has ever made to try to dictate what a person’s Internet experience will be has ended up coming up empty,” Fred Wilson said. He claims that everyone is one click away from the web. Myspace users aren’t happy with the site. If it isn’t their site after all, maybe the users will think about things in another way.

Yeah, it seems like Myspace has sold out and it's really all just about advertising and making a profit. It was fun while it lasted though.I honestly think that that's the reason Facebook is winning out over Myspace. People get so annoyed with the advertisements and don't want to be forced into using the Myspace applications. It almost feels like we're losing some of our choices when it comes to doing things with Myspace.

I never had a Myspace account; therefore I can't say whether or not I would leave the site over too many advertisements or less control over my web page. I can see why people wouldn't want to be forced into using Myspace applications, but I am still not swayed by the excessive advertisement argument. If people were really committed to the site, then I don't think a couple advertisements should bother them so much. Furthermore, I can understand why the site must regulate what goes up on their web pages. They have to ensure their name is not compromised over someone’s posts. They have to maintain some control on their web site; however I can understand why people would be apposed to using Myspace, if they don't have some freedom of expression. It's important that they give their users some liberties, but in moderation.

The article demonstrates that advertising on social networking sites is proving to be a difficult proposition. A delicate balance must be struck, enough advertising to make a profit but not enough to make the site's user's feel intruded upon.

MySpace has sold out because people have let it sold out, in fact they wanted it to sell out. It is naive to think that a business exists for any reason other than to make money. But that is the fundamental flaw of all capitalist societies. Eliminate the love of money, the only love that CEOs deem "family-friendly", and you will eliminate the problems that come with it.

I too, never had a my space account and I don't think that the ads are affecting its members. I think my space has its right to control what members are allowed to have on their page. I think my space will soon loose half its account holders to facebook and bebo.

I do not believe the ads in MySpace is the reason for which users are leaving neither. I think the main reason of MySpace's losing users is that there are more Communities on the internet that have more user friendlier applications and designs like Facebook. I Believe that MySpace has the right to put ads in the webside since that is way the company generates profit, it is a way of us, the users, pays back for using the webside for entertainment.
