Myspace

Myspace is the largest social networking website. Facebook comes in second place, and Bebo in third place. Myspace is owned by News Corporation. It has 118 million worldwide users. Even with so many users, Myspace is not doing so well. Myspace was expected to meet a $1 billion revenue. Myspace is making about 6 to 7 dollars on each user per year. In order to solve this problem, Myspace is going to put more advertisement on its website. They are putting more advertisement in the Myspace sign up page and on profiles. By putting more advertisement Myspace needs to move around some things on their website to fit in the ads. This new change may affect users. Some users don't want to be bombarded with more advertisement. Others might feel like all Myspace cares about is making money. New advertisement may draw users away. People may sign up for other websites like Facebook. Myspace and Facebook have many similarities. Both websites allow users to keep in touch with friends. You can share and tag pictures. Users can post comments on their friend's profile. Myspace and Facebook also have differences. Myspace allows you to personalize your profile page. Users can put different backgrounds and customize it to their preference. A major difference between the two websites is the amount of advertisement each website has. Facebook doesn't have as many advertisements as Myspace. Some users say Facebook is more straight forward and easier to use. Others also say that Myspace is for a younger generation. It seems like it is designed for mostly teens. Facebook in the other hand was first used only by college students. Facebook later then opened their website and let anyone sign up. Facebook is getting close to the amount of users Myspace has. Facebook may catch up soon. Will the increase in advertisements draw people to other social networking websites? The future of Myspace is unknown.

I think that Myspace has a very unsteady future. This is because of all the advertisements. Many people, including myself, do not like advertisements, and find them annoying. I tend to not look at advertisements, and even if I do, they don’t make me think, o, I really want product x, because it looks so cool. Also, putting advertisements on websites costs a lot of money. Is it really worth it to the companies to spend that amount of money to advertise on a site such as Myspace? I guess so, because they do it. And I can’t blame them because a site such as Myspace has millions of users on it. Although I really do feel this way, I can understand why the businesses do it: because for some people, it really does work. They see an advertisement, and they think, o, wouldn’t it be so cool to have product xyz. I think I am going to go out now and get it. Hence, it is a moneymaker for the companies. Either way, advertisements do seem to have an effect on consumers because otherwise the companies would not do it.
There is also a money issue here for Myspace. The site, according to my understanding, wants to make more then $6-7 on each user per year. And they seem to be using the advertisement industry as a way to just that.

Like the real world society the online society known as myspace has become corrupt. It has been taken over by consumerism and the corporate world. I believe this is why it has failed for me and i hope that facebook does not make the same mistake.

To me it makes perfect sense why they load up their web pages with advertisements. Why shouldn't they utilize their web page to make as much money as possible. Myspace is a business just as TV is a business. when there are commercials on TV in-between the shows your watching do you say, why do they have all these advertisement? Generally you wouldn't unless you pay extra to have uninterrupted shows. The only way to keep these devices alive is through advertisements.
Myspace is providing its users with a free social networking site. If a few advertisements really gets on your nerves, then don't use the site; but I don't think anyone has the right to complain that they're to many advertisement on Myspace. Obviously they're out to make as much money for themselves as possible; who wouldn't be. You have a right not to join the site if this bothers you, but no right to complain.

I agree with Sam. Yes, having all these advertisements clutter up the screen and it no longer feels like "my space", but the website does need to make money and what better way than through these ads. Even more so, like Sam stated, no one ever complains when five minutes of commercials come on and ruin the most intense scene of hte episode. On the other hand, Myspace can post the advertisements in another way so that they don't cover the page and the members don't feel like they lost control of their pages. It is a little bit of a pathetic reason to stop using Myspace because of the advertisements. As long as the website is doing its job of social networking then why should it matter.

The advertisement on the Myspace actuality bothers the users. But I agree with Sam, “You have a right not to join the site if this bothers you, but no right to complain.” Every business need ways to help them to make profit, and most media companies will choose the advertisements. On the other hand, too much advertisements actuality will bother customers. Like some free download websites, the software download is free, but they ask the users have to click the ads first, and then users can continuous next steps. This way to make people to see the ads is stronger than Myspace. So we cannot to stop using Myspace because of those advertisements.

Myspace is owned by a media conglomerate called News Corporation. News Corp. also owns newspapers and television/radio stations which make their money almost solely form ad revenue. However, they may be making a mistake in thinking that new media (including myspace) can be run in the same way.

I too agree their are far to many advertisments on myspace. I stopped using this site long before the excessive advertising that is now an issue. However when i used the site i didnt pay any attention to the adds. Because of this i dont see why people are making a big deal over a couple of advertisements. Advertisements are everywhere, why would it be any different on myspace. It is your choice to look at them or not.

I agree with mostly all of you, My space does have too many advertisements, but its the persons own choice to pay attention to it. Its My space's way of making money and you never know maybe for some people those ads were useful and probably got them a job or a good deal on products. As long as people are connecting throughout the world - then my space is doing its job - after all it is a social networking website.

Myspace has a very shaky future at best. Advertisements, undue corporate influence on the part of NewsCorp, and the infiltration by an underground network of sex offenders and cyber bullies have paralyzed the once dominant social networking site. Corporate influence has shut down free speech and free expression, only "signed" artists can share music, and speech deemed offensive is regularly taken down. The idea of social networking is noble, however in practice it allows a few companies to regulate speech expressed through online mediums. When money is involved, special interests become involved, however on the flipside, how can an organization remain safe and efficient without funds?

I think Myspace has the right to advertisments as any other company. How can you ask someone to not make money, or not to make as much money as they can? Everyone needs money and everyone wants to make more of it. That's the way the world works. It is true that they are making a gamble with their users but if people really wanted to stay with Myspace they would.
