Youtube Article Summary

YouTube is a web site with a vast source of videos. The popularity of this web site has skyrocketed since its creation in 2005 measured by the amount of users that visit the site. However, the YouTube now wants users to stop visiting their site and instead add YouTube players on their own sites. From these YouTube players users would be able to access YouTube’s whole video archive, comment and rate videos as they do on Youtube.com. Along with the new YouTube players camera companies Casio and Logitech are creating cameras that allow you to upload videos directly to the site; TiVo will allow their customers to upload videos from their televisions. Not only will these YouTube players increase the amount of users YouTube has because of its convenience, but it will also bring more revenue to the company because of its capability for in stream ads. The demand for video ads has on the rise and YouTube holds true potential. All in all, YouTube is looking towards change, change to give their users more freedom and convenience and change to gain more profits.

This is a great example of “media convergence.” By allowing others to place a fully functional player on their site or access videos through Tivo, YouTube is planning for a future in which many different types of media intersect. Strategically I think it was a brilliant move.
